Overview
Unity is a large-scale, outdoor, circus spectacle that blends audio visual wizardry and a cast of high flying, wire walking aerial acrobatics to explore and reflect on who we are and who we want to be. What kind of society do we want to live in? How do we want to treat each other? and most importantly, is this the best we could have done?
Unity was debuted at Out Theatre Festival(2021) and has since been performed at the Eisteddfod(2022), NN Festival(2023), Ensemble Festival(2023) and Freedom Festival(2023). Every different location featured a poem from a local spoken word artist, applying those questions to their own community.
Composition
Originally conceptualised during COVID lockdowns, the music was composed remotely, based on discussions with director Ezra Trigg. The soundtrack would become the bedrock of the piece that all other production elements and performance would sync to, so it not only need to be structurally correct but it also needed to drive the narrative, provide rhythm for the performers to respond to and enhance the dramatic intension of each section with atmospheric textures.
The composition was reworked for every performance to accommodate the different spoken word pieces. Every poet brought a unique essence that required something different of the music; structurally, tonally and/or rhythmically.
